"Omonia" square is 15 minutes away in a walking distance from "Constitution" square if you take either "Acadimia" or "Stadiou" Avenue. If you chose "Acadimia" you will see the buildings of the National Library and the first and oldest building of the Athens University. The Library, as well as some other spiritual centers, were included in one of the most successful governors of the Greek state Ioanis Kapodistrias's country development plan. The National Library was built in 1903 by the project of architect Theofil Fricher von Hansen and under the supervision of architect Ernesto Chiller as a part of his famous Trilogy, also including the Academy and Athens University. The Academy is the highest research institution in the country, built in 1926 and functioning under the supervision of the Ministry of education. The Athens University is on 200 position in the world universities ranking.
Let's now go back to "Academia" Avenue. If keep walking along, you will reach "Omonia" square- one of the first places a tourist learns about regardless of having or not been in the Greek capital before. Until recently it was a dirty derelict area where traditionally immigrants would gather. As a result of the efforts of Athenian mayors, however, the square looks differently today. Situated in the middle is a charming garden with some benches, and the square is on occasions used to place art installations. The renovation of the surrounding buildings, as well as the opening of cafeterias, restaurants and several new chain-stores for clothes and cosmetics have changed the appearance of this immigrant area.
If you go along "Patission" Avenue from "Omonia" square, you will soon reach the Archeological museum built in 1829 in neoclassical style. Be careful, though! The museum's collection is so rich that it will take you t least half a day to examine. It contains some of the most significant artifacts from the prehistoric period until late antiquity and is considered one of the biggest museums in the world. Of great interest are also the African, Egyptian and Chinese collections, so load up on patience and go.
