There are a couple of nice islands that are worth to be seen in the sea around Athens. So if you have an extra day or two, get on the ferry and enjoy the unique atmosphere of the Greek islands.
Agistri is a small island in the Saronic Gulf covered with pine trees, one hour away on a ferry from Pirea port, and 10 minutes away from Aegina.
Aegina is the largest island in the Saronic Gulf. According to the legend, it takes its name after the nymph Aegina, Aeacus's mother, who was kidnapped by Zeus and brought to this island. Her son was born here and he ruled over the island in a shape of a heart. This is the place where in ancient times the first silver coins were cut out, with an image of a sea-turtle on them. For two years after the Turkish occupation Aegina used to be the capital of Greece. The trip to the island is approximately 40 minutes.
The island of Hydra can be reached in approximately 30 minutes.
