A village is evacuated because of the fires

The forest fires in the province of Achaia, Peloponnese and Kissamos, Chania area on Crete, are still raging and late yesterday a village was evacuated as a precaution.

In the region of Achaia the fire is located near the villages of Drepano and Platani, with no homes at risk, but according to local residents, farms have been damaged.

There are 7 aircrafts and helicopters, 130 firefighters with 69 fire engines and an infantry of 84 people fighting the fire in the region.

Yesterday, three officers from the fire service were slightly injured and had to be taken to the hospital in Rio.

In Kato Kastritsi and in other villages, many residents fled their homes as a precaution.

A state of emergency was declared in the villages of Ano and Kato Kastritsi, Sella, Platani, Argyra and Drepano, in the Achaia region.

Prime Minister George Papandreou arrived in the region, who had interrupted his participation in a Conference, held on the island of Samos.

Earlier, he had contacted the Governor of the Prefecture of Western Greece, Apostolos Katsifaras, to inquire about the situation in the region.

Later, Papandreou spoke to the Minister of Public Order Nikos Dendias, who visited the headquarters of the Fire Service to inquire about the fire's development by the chief, Panagiotis Bonatsos.

Fire in Kissamos, Chania area

Last night, the authorities started the evacuation of residents of Papadiana village, Kissamos Municipality, Chania area on Crete, as the flames threatened the first houses of the village.

The fire, which broke out yesterday afternoon in the area between the villages of Vathi, Papadiana, Kefali and Amigdalokefali, covers an area of about 20 kilometers, according to the Head of Civil Protection in Chania, Thassos Kouroupakis.

Late last night Deputy Regional Governor Apostolos Voulgarakis contacted the Ministry of Public Order and Citizen Protection, and asked for aircrafts and helicopters to be sent early today to help extinguish the fire.

The main concern of the forces fighting the fire is for no residential buildings to be destroyed, but the flames enveloped a building, which was formerly a school. In the area of Kissamos Municipality a helicopter is included in fighting the fire.

The fire in Zevgolatio, Corinth area is raging for the fourth day

The fire, which broke out on Monday in Zevgolatio, Corinth area, is dying out, but it destroyed whole acres of forest land.

In the region of the firestorm, 70 firefighters with 25 fire-engines, and an infantry of 29 people are fighting the flames, supported by two aircrafts and one helicopter.
