Greek consumer center gives practical advice on what to buy and what to avoid during Easter shopping.

Food

- Buy from official and controlled markets. Avoid buying food from random street vendors or strange manufacturers, as it may harm your health.

- Buy refrigerated meat and not meat that is being kept from outside, hung on hooks or left on a non-refrigerated stand.

- Pay attention to the place from where you buy the food – it must be clean and equipped with adequate facilities for storage of meat and dairy products.

Meat

- It is forbidden to slaughter animals (lambs, goats, etc.) outside legal slaughterhouses. Contrary may constitute a danger to public health.

- Meat must be kept frozen at a temperature of 2-5°C for fresh meat and a temperature lower than -18°C for frozen one. It must never be put outdoors.

- Consumers should always compare the price of the meat with its quality and to look for hygiene control stamps, indicating that the responsible veterinary services have made the necessary checks.

- The color of the stamp should give us information on the origin of the meat we buy. Greek lamb is produced in the EU and it has a blue stamp, which includes the place of origin. Imports from third countries have brown stamps, which also include the country of origin.

Eggs

- Suitable for consumption eggs can be verified by the stamp on the shell, which writes the date of laying and the date by which they are suitable for consumption. If you buy eggs from a street vendor and they have no stamps, then you should see whether the vendor has written the laying day and their expiration date.

- Avoid buying eggs with dirty, unnatural or flat shell.

- Avoid eating eggs with drops on their shell, with colored whites, with yolks mixed with whites or bad odor.

- To keep the eggs in good condition, do not wash them and keep them in a cool place.

- After boiling the eggs you must keep them in the fridge.

Chocolate

Beware of chocolate eggs. Examine the packaging in order to avoid bad quality chocolate and never forget to check out the expiration date.

Vegetables

Before consuming the vegetables you must wash them thoroughly with water.
