Xenophobia in Greece is growing

Four people were arrested after an initiated improvised inspection of documents in the public market in Messologi. The men asked a seller aged 58 to show them his permit for the use of the stall but he refused to present it to them. The owner of the adjoining stall informed the policemen patrolling nearby about the improvised inspection by unauthorized persons. The police managed to capture two violators at the scene.

They are young people aged 25 and 20 and according to publications in the Greek press, they are members of the radical nationalist party Golden Dawn. The other two participants in the campaign, aged 24 and 43 respectively, were captured a little later on Tuesday. One of those captured is a foreigner of Greek origin, but he strongly supports the position of the neo-Nazi party for "clean" Greece.

This is the second similar incident in the public market of Messologi in less than a week. Over the weekend, a group of Golden Dawn deputies led by Konstantinos Barbarousis made an inspection of some of the stalls to make sure that all traders in the open market were Greeks and that they had the necessary documents. The main slogan of the campaign of Golden Dawn is "No more black trade." They do not deny that their actions are directed mainly against foreigners, not so much to Greeks, who play a role in the illegal trade in the country.

Another accident that shocked the capital this week was the injuring of two people and the burning of a hairdresser’s an immigrant from Pakistan owns. The small business is located in the metropolitan area of Metamorfosi. Earlier this month, the owner had been threatened that if he did not close his shop and go back to where he had come from, he would sweat for it. A few days later, the shop window was broken. About a dozen men dressed in black broke into the hairdresser’s at 10 pm on Monday this week.

According to an eyewitness, who spoke to newsit.gr, some of the attackers had face masks and others did not. One of them started beating the hairdresser’s owner and the other man, having exchanged a few impolite words with the customer whose hair the Pakistani was cutting at the time of the attack, pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the arm. The stabbed victim is a Greek, a taxi driver from the neighbourhood, who was a regular customer of the small hairdresser’s.

"The problem of the country is not Golden Dawn. Even if the party disappears, the problem of Greece will not be resolved because the country has become a protectorate of its creditors and has no sovereignty. The problem of the country is lawlessness and the absence of a fair state to impose the law," the spokesman of Golden Dawn Ilias Kasidiaris justifies the actions of the party.
