The relatives of a 49-year-old woman from Perea, Thessaloniki area, who died of cancer claim that she was buried alive.

As forensic doctor Fotios Hadjinicolaou points out before APE-MPE news agency, the woman's body has been transported to the morgue and the autopsy will be completed today, in the late afternoon, and it will shed light on the bizarre case.

The forensic doctor of Ioannina will be present during the autopsy as well since the Balkan Medical Centre in Thessaloniki that issued the death certificate of the woman has summoned him for security reasons.

Meanwhile, the Centre has released the medical report stating that at 6:31 am on 25 September 2014 a qualified doctor had established the clinical death of the woman with initials K. D. Z., who suffered from terminal cancer.

The death was established by a clinical examination and confirmed by an electrocardiogram. "The cardiogram confirmed the termination of the heart functions of the patient previously mentioned," reads the medical report.

Director of the national emergency centre Chrissi Matsikoudi who was on duty yesterday says for  Athens News Agency that the ambulance arrived from Perea at the cemetery a few minutes after the phone number 100 received information that cries for help were heard from the grave.

"When the ambulance arrived, the coffin was not even completely buried, the gravedigger was still throwing soil on it. The cardiogram performed after the woman was removed from the grave showed that she was dead. I myself arrived at the scene soon afterwards and found out that the body was already stiff, but it should be noted that rigor mortis may not occur for 10 minutes", said Chrissi Matsikoudi.

"It is not possible for the woman to be crying for help a few minutes earlier and for us to find her body stiff. The woman's eyes were open, but the forensic doctor can explain this. As for her mouth, I cannot say that it was open, it was rather flabby," says the doctor.

The police authorities in Thessaloniki began to investigate the case yesterday afternoon, having been informed by the relatives of the 49-year-old woman that she had woken up from the coma but died of suffocation in the coffin shortly after being buried.

The prosecutor’s office in Thessaloniki has been notified of the case and a preliminary investigation is underway.
