Even though the holiday program continues for the ministries, political associations and institutions, the court yard on Evelpidon street is full of people. Dozens are the buildings housing the courtrooms. Legal committees of one, three or more members are hearing the planned cases. Investigators are questioning offenders, prosecutors are laying charges.

Court sittings are opened to the public. Anyone who wishes may follow the progress of a court case. In a courtroom for civil lawsuits there is a case against an employee of a private company – a truck driver. He is accused that he has not preserved load of the company because he has parked the truck he is in charge of in a inappropriate place. Company requires that the driver repays 120 000 Euro. His lawyer is trying to negotiate a lower amount. Judge asks the driver if he could pay. He says he expects to receive an old debt in the near future. Driver has taken responsibility of the lost goods and says he will probably be able to pay for the loss, but with a check, not in cash. Gesticulates with hands and shouts. Judge tells him to stay quiet and his sits obediently on his chair. Then come the witnesses. First comes the accountant of the company. She approaches the judge, stands in front of him and swears to tell the truth by placing her hand on the gospel book. Her testimonies are against the driver. Second witness in the case is obviously a friend of the defendant. He defends him as a friend and shares with the judge that both sides had to get to an agreement on their own, however they didn’t manage to do it and that is why they ended up in court. He, however believes in the professionalism of the defendant and that is why he came all the way from Thessalonica today in order to defend him.

Meanwhile in the courtroom people are coming in and out all the time. It is not clear whether they have any relation to the case or if they are just passing by. The one-member committee doesn’t come to a final decision. They stay proceedings for Monday. Lawyer of the prosecution is not happy. The one of the defendant is more satisfied. Defendant looks worried, he makes the impression of a person who even in his sleep would count huge amounts of money to repay the loss.  “What can be done”, he says and goes out.

Judge drinks a glass of water and takes deep breath. The next ones are entering…
