Torrential rains and heavy snowfalls in Greece made the weather heavy. Rivers of waters blocked many roads in central Athens. The rain that lasted for hours flooded streets and homes. There are snow-ploughs cleaning the roads and throwing salt throughout the road network in the country.

The weather in the rest of the country is bad too. The situation in central and northern Greece is heavier. Authorities have banned ships to leave from the ports in Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio due to strong winds in the Aegean and Ionian seas. The ferries Edipsos - Arkitsa and Kilini – Zakynthos are stopped.

The fire brigade in Attica has received about 395 calls so far. Most of them were for water suction and in some cases firefighters were called to remove fallen trees.

Heavy rains in the Aegean islands caused tremendous damage. An overflowing river in a village on the island of Kitnos turned and swept away many cars. Many animals drowned, many homes and basements are flooded. Traveling is almost impossible due to the serious damage the heavy rains caused to the road network on the island.

There is at least 10 km long line of cars on the road Athens - Corinth because the traffic is possible to move only in one of the lanes due to a huge amount of water.

The roads in the southeastern suburbs of Athens Artemis, Spata and Pikermi are closed due to flooding. The traffic along other more minor roads in Attica is also hampered.

The road to Parnita from the lift to the mountain peak is closed due to heavy snowfall. Movement of trucks along the old road Elevsina – Thebes from the 40th kilometer to the border of Viotia area is prohibited.

The bad weather caused serious problems in the area of Lamia. Show chains are necessary to drive along the Lamia – Amfissa road because the height of the snow reaches 50 cm in places. Snow chains are needed for the Lamia - Domokos road to Karditsa, Trikala and Larissa.

Trucks without chains stopped the traffic in some places last night. Over 200 cars were blocked on the road to Domokos.

The snowfall was so heavy last night that it was almost impossible to move along the Lamia – Karpenissi road despite the efforts of snow-ploughs.

There is no access to the mountain villages in the western part of Fthiotida area. There was a heavy snowfall there and in some places the height of snow is 70 centimeters.

Snow covered most of the mountain regions in northern Greece so that snow chains are necessary to drive in the region.

After the heavy snowfall last night the situation in Peloponnese is much better today. The traffic returned to its normal after lifting the ban on trucks, buses and heavy vehicle movement on the Tripoli - Sparta highway.

The road Levidi - Nemea remains closed and chains are required for driving along secondary roads in Arcadia area, to the mountain villages in the Argolida region and in the area of Corinth.

The residents of dozens of villages in Arcadia area spent the night without electricity. Damages are being gradually removed since morning and according to the deputy governor of Peloponnesus Vangelis Yanakouras they will try to open the winter centre in Menalo tomorrow. Schools in remote mountain areas are closed.
