Three fire victims at an Athens refinery

One more victim was added to the previous two from the 8 May incident at the Aspropyrgos refinery. 27-year-old Antonis Avrampou, who was struggling for his life in hospital after severe burns, died today.

A total of 6 people were injured, three of whom died. According to the company, the incident was caused by ignition during repairs.

The Minister of Production Reconstruction, Panagiotis Lafazanis,  expressed his sincere condolences to the families of the victims.

"The Minister of Productive Reconstruction, Environment and Energy, Panagiotis Lafazanis, and the Secretary-General for Energy and Raw Materials, Apostolos Alexopoulos, are shocked by the news about the death of the third worker, Antonis Avrampou, 27 years old, caused by the tragic incident of 8 May 2015, at the Hellenic Petroleum refinery. They express their sincere condolences to his family. In parallel, the ministers declare the government’s will to support the family by all possible means, as also pledged by the company’s new management," said the ministry’s statement.

It adds that the death of Antonis Avrampou, the latest tragic event, highlights the need to conduct a thorough and uncompromising investigation into the reasons for the incident and publicly punish those responsible for the tragedy.
