Tension at Piraeus Port – Cruise Ships didn’t Leave the Pier

Members of the Communist Party’s union stood upon the doors of the ships at Piraeus port to express their support to the 24-hour strike of the Union of the mechanics of the merchant navy and “Stefenson”, which was declared illegal by the Court of Piraeus.

Chaos reigns over the port as there are passengers and tourists who can not board the ships, although the shipping companies announced that the routes will be done and ships will not remain tied to the port.

Passengers and about 100 members of the Communist trade union who closed the port at 6:00 am began a war of words. Ships carry only routes to Rafina and Lavrio. Meanwhile, other union members of the Communist Party organized rally in protest against the reforms offered by the government. It will be held at 11 am on Omonoia square and tonight is expected a rally of trade unions of employees in the private and public sectors.

The decision of the trade unions of seafarers to strike was interpreted as “petty interests that affect the whole society and seek to destroy the economic integrity of the Aegean islands,” said representatives of shipping companies. Yesterday, the strike was declared illegal. The fact that the ship crew announced that they will not participate in the strike allowed the shipping companies to take responsibility and to blame the communist unions in petty interests.

According to representatives of shipping companies such protests are unjustified. They stated that they are ready even to cut the ropes of the ships and to put them into the sea because “these demonstrations have no claims and only harm the island Greece... The more advanced the summer, the more problems of this kind will cause huge damages.”

Responsibility for what happened was shifted and to the Ministry of Economy, Competitiveness and Shipping as the problem is within its competences, but it did not prevent what happened and did not provide that “the Communist Party can not stop the ships unreasonably whenever it wants to.”

Meanwhile, the strike continues until midnight.
