Many teachers participating in the procedure for appointing counsellors, directors and deputy directors are trying to win a place in the school hierarchy by submitting fake diplomas, master degree certificates, new technologies and languages certificates.

After Ethnos newspaper published an article about the scandal in March, the Minister of Education Anna Diamandopoulou ordered an official inspection of the authenticity of the qualifications the teachers presented. Then, the justice took the case and the results of the prosecutor's investigation are expected to be announced soon. Today, the seriousness of the problem became clear, as many regional governors have submitted dozens of cases of teacher-applicants who have applied using fake documents.

Typical is the example of a teacher from Agrinio, who presented a fake MBA diploma from a university in the region of Western Macedonia. She even submitted a second fake document. The verification the regional educational authority in Western Macedonia made showed that the university has not issued a diploma of that woman.

The investigation revealed other cases of teachers in Greece who have submitted fake documents to grow in the administrative hierarchy of schools and thus to gain benefits at the expense of those trying to improve their qualification.

The scale of the problem became clear by the fact that 1103 teachers only from primary schools initially said they had acquired a master's degree abroad but only 135 appeared during the procedure for school counsellors. According to education representatives, many of them were afraid to apply and present the fake or questioned diplomas after the commencement of the inspection ordered by the Ministry.

The Ministry of Education admitted that the problem is very serious and deep. Due to this fact, Minister Anna Diamandopoulou required the regional governors to send the results from the school management selection by places to make them public on the website of the Ministry.

Among the most notable cases is the one of an applicant for director, who presented a fake doctorate from the Philosophy School at the University of Athens. Another teacher submitted English language certificates without being able to pronounce a single word in that language. Such is the case of a colleague of his, who acquired a fake diploma for excellent computer literacy.

The trade unions of teachers supported the controls. Some of them said that they have alarmed last year the Ministry of Education about the problem with the mass submission of diplomas from foreign universities. Unionists gave the example of a teacher who had submitted diploma with incorrectly written word - "dilpoma". They expressed their regret that "there are such teachers."

Meanwhile, the efforts are directed to finding out the "centres" that supply everyone with fake diplomas.
