A telephone METRISI poll commissioned by protothema.gr was carried out on 28-29 May covering 1108 individuals from all over Greece. It came up with two primary findings.

Firstly, the delays in the negotiations on the agreement with the institutions create agitation and uncertainty among the majority of citizens: six out of ten say it scares them. Secondly, the majority condemns an eventual agreement with the institutions and defines it as another memorandum, despite government claims to the contrary.

• 58.9% of respondents are worried about delays in the negotiations; this is how 1 in 4 SYRIZA voters feels as well. Only 28.6% are satisfied with the extended negotiations with the institutions.

• 60.1% believe that an agreement with the institutions will be reached; only 21.7% think that the negotiations will hit a dead end.

• A 61.2% majority of respondents assume the agreement will constitute a new memorandum, and only 26.6% are assured that if an agreement is reached, it will match Syriza’s election promises.

• It is worth pointing out that only 60.5% of SYRIZA voters and 60.9% of Independent Greeks voters expect the agreement to be close to SYRIZA’s election commitments.

• 33.2% of SYRIZA voters and 58.7% of Independent Greeks voters want a tougher line in the negotiations, even if it might lead to a dead end. In contrast, 7 of 10 respondents are unwilling to see any hardening of the line.

• 53.6% maintain that if an agreement is reached, it won't have to go through a referendum, voting it in parliament is just enough.

• If no agreement is reached with the institutions, 48.8% prefer to see a broader coalition government, while 53.6% are against early parliamentary elections.

• 71.4% of respondents believe that the European partners do not want Greece’s exit from the eurozone.

• Alexis Tsipras remains the strongest card of the government. 44.5% of respondents are satisfied with his stewardship, although approval has declined somewhat: it is nearly 6% lower than it was in April.

• In contrast, the approval of the government has shrunk to 33.2%, and key sectors of government policy are splitting the public opinion.

• Dissatisfaction with government policies is expressed in two main points. First, 52.4% of respondents say that the government’s policies have weakened the country's standing in the negotiations. Second, 59.4% are unhappy with the way the government has behaved during negotiations with the institutions. This goes for 34.2% of Syriza voters.

• In parallel, misgivings for the future are on the increase, as 6 out of 10 respondents anticipate that the situation of both the country and their household will worsen over the next 12 months.

• In terms of voters’ preferences, SYRIZA (with 33.2%) enjoys a lead of 9.1% over New Democracy (24.1%). Potami comes third with 6.3%. The Independent Greeks have a stronger approval of 5.3% compared with April, the Communist Party takes 5.3%, and Golden Dawn - 5.1%. PASOK’s share is only 3.1%. 5.4% of respondents would vote for another party, and 12.2% gave no answer.
