The rift between New Democracy and SYRIZA was confirmed after the meeting between Antonis Samaras and Alexis Tsipras. They reached consensus on only one topic – they cannot establish a coalition government together. Samaras welcomed in his office in the National Assembly on Syntagma Square the leader of the radical left first, which is the second political force after the liberals of New Democracy. The result of the first meeting between Samaras and Tsipras does not surprise anyone, since SYRIZA won the second place in the elections with anti-memorandum campaign. New Democracy leader continues to seek followers to form a cabinet with an absolute majority of 151 votes. Meetings with the leaders of PASOK Evangelos Venizelos and the Democratic Left Fotis Kouvelis follow.
"We will not to push in through the window what the Greek people threw out through the door yesterday," said Tsipras after the meeting with Samaras. Thus, he refused to accept the invitation of New Democracy to take part in a coalition government. The Constitution provides that if New Democracy fails to reach to an agreement with PASOK and the Democratic Left, the President of Greece will give the mandate to the leader of the second party in terms of number of votes collected (SYRIZA) to form a coalition government. Tsipras showed that he is eagerly looking forward to this opportunity and said he would try to unite the left forces to take Greece out of the Memorandum of financial assistance.
