Greek social network users are organising meetings in Athens, Thessaloniki and other major Greek cities to support the government. They are scheduled for 6:00 pm today, in Syntagma Square outside the Greek Parliament in Athens, outside the White Tower in Thessaloniki and in the central squares in Patras, Heraklion, Chania, Kastoria and other cities under the slogan, "They cannot blackmail us, we do not bend under pressure, we are not afraid, we do not yield, we win."

The authors of the idea of conducting meetings wrote, "On Wednesday evening chief banker Draghi decided to play again Merkel’s game and to blackmail the Greek people and the new Greek government but neither will we, who have been living under the yoke of the Memoranda over the past five years, succumb, nor will the government of Alexis Tsipras, which started to work a few days ago, totally respecting the mandate given to it by the Greek people. No one can scare us. Democracy has had its say and no one can fail to hear it."

"We are going to Syntagma Square and other squares in the country at 6:00 pm on Thursday, 5 February, and for as many days as it will take, to send the message to all those who think they can do with us whatever they want that they have misunderstood something. The time when Greece was on its knees, ruled by obedient governments, has passed. We support the firm stance of our government. We send our solidarity to all the peoples of Europe who expect Greece to send a message of dignity and to end the policy of austerity."

Thousands of users have already indicated that they will participate in the meetings whereas some others are puzzled by the fact that, according to the organisers of the meetings, a newly elected government needs such support.

Meanwhile, veteran politician Stefanos Manos has appealed in public for the meetings not to take place. "A protest against the refusal of Europeans to comply with our positions. The method of meetings was used by Mr. Samaras (when he was the age of Mr. Tsipras) in the dispute with Skopje. The only thing that meetings achieve is to limit our (Greece’s) space for negotiations. I am appealing to cancel them."
