At around 6 a.m. this morning the special riot control forces occupied the dump in Fyli to ensure access for the private companies that undertook the cleaning of Athens and Thessaloniki. Cleaning services workers decided to announce a new 48-hour strike for Monday and Tuesday. At night, about twenty strikers had occupied the entrance to the landfill and closed it using large containers.
The reaction of the strikers was wild, when they heard that the mayor of Athens, George Kaminis, had asked the court to declare their strike illegal. In a special written statement strikers characterised the actions of the Mayor of Athens as "anti-worker and totalitarian." Members of the union of cleaning services employees who are municipal officials announced an emergency press conference for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The three private companies, which were assigned to clean Athens and Thessaloniki, are reluctant to do their job considering the current complex situation. Since yesterday at the landfill there has also been a duty prosecutor, who will sentence anyone causing riots following the rapid judicial procedure.
