Severe weather claims the life of four

The recent raging storm in the area of Magnezia took the lives of three. A 72-year old man and his brother were dragged by the waters while taking care of their animals. The body of one of the farmers was discovered on Thursday night and on Friday rescue teams found the bodies of his brother and another 67 years old man, missing until then. The man left his vehicle in order to escape the oncoming waters when he fell in flooded pumping-shaft.

Heavy rains started Thursday midnight and lasted for 15 hours, causing great damage. 15 schools were closed. Over 90 emergency calls were received at the Volos fire department for flooded houses. The stormy sea sunk a refugee ship close to Leros Island. Fishermen working nearby helped rescuing 25 people and pulled the body of a drowned man out of the water. According to the passengers, a woman is still missing.

The head of Magnezia municipality announced state of emergency in the districts of Almiro, Karlas, Agria, Sourpi, Milies, Skiatos, Skopelos and Makrinitza.

Record damages suffered the districts Ftiotida and Halkidiki, and heavy snowfalls started in Central and Western Macedonia. Roads from Arnisa, Kerasia and Agios Athanasios towards the winter resort Kaimaktzalan were closed.

The traffic has been normalized in the district of Seres, but drivers should be extra-cautious when driving in the mountain areas of Central and Western Macedonia, says police.

Storms and rains are expected today as well in East- Central Greece, in Evbea, on the Northern and Eastern Aegean islands, the Dodecanese. Snowfall is expected in mountain areas. On Sunday, cloudy weather and snowing are expected in the district Epyros, in Macedonia and Thrace. It will be raining in the rest of the country; snows are expected in some areas. The temperature in Northern Greece will be around 10 degrees.
