A total of six police officers were arrested in recent days for abuse of their official duties. Their behavior caused severe reaction from the minister of public defense.

One case relates to two policemen and three security guards from the Acropolis police department, who beat a Chilean citizen. The man was arrested in the police station few days before the holidays. The arrested policemen were taken to the police prosecutor and expected are the results of the investigation and the punishment. The already done investigation under the supervision of the head of the Greek police Lefteris Ikonomou shows that the detained Chilean expressed his strong dissatisfaction and desire to make a phone call. Probably the guard reacted with violence, the Chilean replied, more police came for back up and started hitting him. Officers claim that the prisoner tried to escape and attacked them. Police arrested the foreigner on December 23 for violation of the law - possessing a weapon and assaulting a citizen with a knife. The prosecutor had scheduled a hearing for 8 January, after which the Chilean was arrested until the implementation of an administrative measure for his extradition, because he did not have a permit to stay in the country.

40-year employee of the police station in Corinth was temporarily removed from service. He was charged with violation of the law, for possession of a weapon, assault and making threats. He got into an argument with a citizen over a parking spot. Then he threatened him with a knife and fled.

The reaction of Minister Mihalis Hrisohoidis was strong. He could not hide his disappointment at the recent cases of professional misconduct of police officers, moreover, this occured at a time when the ministry is trying to implement measures to restrict them. Hrisohoidis defined the police misuse as abuse of power and suppression of human dignity.
