Secret Beaches a Couple of Steps away from Athens

Attica means something like “the earth of numerous beaches” and this is not by chance, if you think about how many coves, beaches and rocky coastal areas there are in the area around Athens. The problem is not in quantity but in quality as the inhabitants of the city are  numerous. There are constant traffic jams, and some places are quite noisy and dirty. That is not part of anyone’s image for spending a quiet Sunday by the sea.

But the average Athenian underestimates what a tourist would appreciate and so he counts the days to the leave and loses what he could enjoy during the weekends in his own town. Here are some suggestions for hiding nooks that the reporter of Vima newspaper Eli Ismaylidu makes.

For example, municipal beaches in the Vulyagmeni suburb are not overcrowded, nor is it necessary for visitors to pay expensive fee like for the beach of the super luxury Astera hotel, which is also located in the suburb. The reason not many people to visit them is that they are rocky places and you must wear sneakers to get off there.

Thymari

This beautiful sandy beach is located just after Playa Fokino, at the 54th km of the coastal boulevard. Access is easy, but the fact that there is no beach bar limits the number of visitors. But the site hides a surprise for those who like to get away from noise – one small bay with rocks in the north of the beach, which is visible only from the road.

Ramnoundas

You have to be careful and have patience to get to the beach, which is under Ramnoundas archaeological site. That is why few Athenians go there, and the beach is the favorite place of nudists. Go to Gramatiko and turn right before arriving in the village at the plate that says Limnionas. Then proceed very carefully on the steep dirt road to the plate, which indicates to turn left onto Ceci. There turn right and a steep down road will take you to the church where you will park and head to shore.

Second port Daskalio

Those who choose Daskalio for their Sunday rest usually come to the first port, which is crowded by taverns. Only one kilometer away there is a second port, which is much more colorful, with cleaner water and beach of small pebbles and sand. Small houses near the beach remind Kitnos.

Kape

Shortly before you get ot Legrena towards Sounion, once you pass Harakas, there is a big sign painted with graffiti, which shows you to turn right on the dirt road. There is a plate that says “Property of Kape” a few meters below, which will confirm that you are on the right place. Welcome to the hidden paradise! Take the dirt road until you reach a small plain where you will turn left and find a large beach with fine sand, which is known as the beach of Kape. If you want to hole up alone, you can park on the plain and go down the path in the right. When you get down you will find a little cove where there are nudists usually, but this is the right place for those who like to climb rocks and explore underwater caves.

Maratonas

There is a small beach with small pebbles and incredible views where the beach of Maratonas merges with the one of Shinya. To get there you have to go to the end of the central road that passes near the beach of Maratonas, where the cycleway begins. Continue walking and you will reach a colorful tavern, under which is the small beach.

Matty

Going along the central road of Rafina from Matty to Nea Makri, just before the plate that says Ambelupoli, you will see the end of the tightly built houses and the beginning of some abandoned fields with pine trees.. Hence if you get off to sea, you will see a small cove where the pine trees reach the clear waters and there is a narrow beach not suitable for man
