Second claim for treason against Varoufakis

An Athenian lawyer has submitted to the prosecutor's office of the Supreme Court a claim against Yanis Varoufakis. He urges the supreme judicial authorities to bring against the former Minister of Finance charges to the degree of felony for preparing or attempting to commit high treason. In addition, the lawyer appeals to submit the claim to parliament to allow MPs to support or oppose the convening of an extraordinary court for the case of Yanis Varoufakis.

Moreover, Giannopoulos urges the senior magistrates to investigate the presence of evidence for committing a crime by other members of the coalition cabinet of SYRIZA and Independent Greeks.

The lawyer argues that, through deceitful actions, Yanis Varoufakis has caused to the Greek people damage amounting to 20.8 billion euro and that he "directly and ruthlessly has violated the political and legal mandate given to him by the Greek people, the Greek Prime Minister and Parliament, the explicit content of which he has sworn to fulfil."

According to him, the violation of this legal mandate "has caused incalculable damage to the public interest of the country and negative consequences to the detriment of the majority of Greek citizens, households and companies."

"Through numerous actions and inactions, the former Minister of Finance has undermined the mandate provided by the Prime Minister, the Government and Parliament, thus leading the country to economic suffocation, financial weightlessness and a new round of recession, humiliating the Greek people and dooming them to wait at ATMs and withdraw the 60 euro allowed per day because they have been patriotic enough to trust Greek banks and his public statements."

The claim of the lawyer against Varoufakis is the second after that of Apostolos Gletsos, Stilida mayor and leader of non-parliamentary Telia party ("Point" - author’s note). According to him, the dire financial situation of Greece is to blame entirely on Yanis Varoufakis.

The claim was submitted to the Athens prosecutor's office on 7 July, and a week later, it was published on the party website, where those citizens who agree with it can support it. In statements to the Greek online edition protothema.gr, Gletsos said, "Telia will bring a suit against Yanis Varoufakis for the serious situation that is due to him, for the 11 billion euro that the Greek people have lost because of him, for his statements like "I'm terrified of the situation" that have chased investors and many other things."

Meanwhile, the decision of the former Minister of Finance to vote in favour of the second package, despite his initial negative vote on the agreement with creditors, came as a surprise. Minutes after the voting at 4:00 am today, he justified his decision with an article in the government friendly website thepressproject.gr. Yanis Varoufakis states in it that he supported the "two measures that I had also proposed, but under radically different terms and conditions."
