Score settling in the government and SYRIZA

A fragile balance in the government and SYRIZA is marking the attempt to complete the negotiations on the new programme. Despite the 32 members who disagree with it, the Prime Minister will try tonight to increase the number of party MPs who will vote "for" the measures.

The "frontal attack" of Alexis Tsipras against the doubters within the party was in this spirit too. Referring to Panagiotis Lafazanis, Yanis Varoufakis and Zoe Konstantopoulou, the Prime Minister urged them not to hide behind the safety of his signature, and accused them of the lack of an alternative plan. He made clear that, in the near future, there would be no other obligations in the field of law and that they should give priority to the negotiations.

In other words, Alexis Tsipras has demonstrated his determination to remain the leader of his party until the elections. As government sources point out for iefimerida.gr, he "does not worry that the necessary 120 deputies will not gather; the expectation is for a better result than last week’s 123 votes "for" the measures."

Furthermore, it is no coincidence that the government has preferred to facilitate MPs by presenting for voting a package of relatively light measures:

The taxation of farmers is finally removed.

Early retirement will be delayed.

The regulation on abolishing the auctions for the first house because of unpaid contributions will be included in the bill on bad loans.

Those who disagree are ready for action

Meanwhile, those party members who disagree continue to support their position as well as the representatives of the Left Platform.

The first of them insist they will not accept this duality and require SYRIZA party to assume its social role. On the other hand, the members of Panagiotis Lafazanis’ Left Platform faction are  hinting that "no one should be indifferent to the party," warning that they would not succumb during the forthcoming voting, nor would they change their position and give way to a policy in which they do not believe.

Score settling during the congress is in store

The Prime Minister however expects to see tonight the reactions of those MPs from the group of the 53 who abstained in the voting.

According to the latest schedule, the Political Bureau will meet tomorrow when the voting will have already passed, and SYRIZA leadership will have a clear picture about the possibility or impossibility of a new party unification.

Finally, Alexis Tsipras has sent a clear message that from September SYRIZA will be brought to "collective process on a broad bases", thus announcing the party congress, whereas the Left Platform insists on convening the Central Committee over the weekend.
