Robbers are leaving the banks and are aiming at burglaries

New increase in crime have been registered in the first half of 2011 compared to the same period of 2010, according to the latest statistics of the Greek police.

Throughout the country thefts have increased by 7.5%, while robbery by 5.1%. According to the data 265 burglaries and robberies are carried out every day throughout the country, out of which 165 in Athens! Moreover, throughout the country are registered every day about 19 burglaries, out of which 15 are in the Greek capital. Every two days a murder is carried out.

Impressive is also the fact that due to security measures taken, there is a significant reduction in robberies of banks, post offices and supermarkets, and homes theft have increased, thefts in shops and petrol stations. Respectively, while a decrease in thefts from vehicles (eg a radio cassette.) and attacks on public transport, there is a significant increase in thefts of handbags.

In the first half of 2011 an increase in illegal immigrants crossing from the Turkish-Greek border in the Maritsa River was recorded, 21% more illegal immigrants than in the same period last year. Indicative of increased criminal activity is the fact that only in the first half of 2011, 232 gangs and criminal organizations have been neutralized, 82,216 people have been arrested and 1,013 weapons have been found!

In particular throughout the country in the first half of 2011, there were 3,363 thefts registered as compared to 3200 during the same period last year. In Attica 2624 thefts have been committed as opposed to 2429 last year, ie an increase of about 8%! Out of these thefts  in the capital 575 have been carried out on the street, having mobile phones or small amounts stolen, in 364 cases a bag is stolen, 284 robberies were committed in stores, 147 supermarkets, 22 in banks and 254 in the housing. Impressive is the change in bank robberies - mostly thanks to the actions of the police - as in the same period of 2010, there were 124 such crimes! Conversely, home burglaries during the same period last year were only 117 (ie this year they have doubled), and theft of bags - 292.

As to the burglary in 2011 throughout Greece 48,262 cases have been registered as compared to 44,895 last year. In Attica, in particular, 28,426 burglaries have been made as compared to 27,313 last year, ie there is an increase of around 4%.

More specifically, in Athens in the first half of 2011 were made 9228 thefts from cars, 6348 burglaries, 4104 robberies of stores and 2140 petty thefts in public places. There is an impressive increase in attacks on churches by 180.95%, having registered 549 cases in recent months against 21 last year.

Finally, there is an impressive increase of 20.52% registered in the Attica in the theft of cars. There are 9097 registered cases as compared to 7,548 during the same period last year. Significant, according to Greek police is also the increase in thefts of heavy trucks and buses - 59.14%!
