Reshuffles in the government

Quick government reshuffles were made today in Greece. Former President and Chief Executive Officer of the Greek National Electric Company, Takis Athanasopoulos, is taking command over the Privatization Agency. The position fell vacant last week when Konstantinos Mitropoulos resigned. Mitropoulos justified his decision with the long-lasting political crisis and the subsequent staff vacuum, which in practice have blocked the activities of the Agency. He said that the administrative council of the institution hasn't been able to gather since April, and that a number of transactions ready for privatization are waiting on the desks, and instead of denationalizing institutions for at least 2 billion euro by the end of the year, the state will hardly be able to make transactions worth more than 300 million.

Takis Athanasopoulos's right-hand man will be Yiannis Emiris, who was appointed as an executive director of the same agency. Emiris is a former director of ALPHA BANK group's Investment bank.

Efthimios Vidalis, who also comes from the private business, is the new negotiator for the Greek government, appointed for the concessions' renegotiation of four big high-speed highways. He is a former director of the most successfully developing Greek company, S & B, which despite the economic crisis, is reporting triple-digit percentage profits. Efthimios Vidalis will negotiate with the consortiums that are building and taking care of the Ionian highway near Ioannina, Elefsina-Patras highway, the motorway connecting Corinth and Kalamata and the segment of Maliakos in central Greece. The aim is for a bill to be prepared, by the end of September, which the Parliament will pass.

Today, the Greek Land Forces headquarters also changed the commander-in-chief, after the unexpected resignation of Konstantinos Ziazias. The General resigned late last night and according to Greek media the reason for this is his disagreement with the staff changes, made by the new Minister of Defence Panos Panagiotopoulos. His place will be taken by Konstantinos Ginnis.
