The Greek police apprehended three Bulgarians for the trafficking of refugees during inspections carried out by the border police in Evros last Saturday.

In the first case, two Bulgarian citizens aged 47 and 37, and one Syrian, aged 24, tried to transport five illegal immigrants from Syria to the interior of Greece.

The three were apprehended in the region of Mandra, on the road Arda - Ormenio, when the border police officers stopped a car with a Bulgarian registration plate the driver of which was the 24-year-old Syrian.

The investigation established that the two Bulgarians had arrived in Greece by two cars with Bulgarian registration plates, giving one of them to the Syrian to transport his compatriots who had illegally entered Greece.

The two Bulgarians were apprehended when they voluntarily appeared at a police station to complain about the supposed theft of the car by which the trafficking of immigrants was carried out.

The investigation resulted in seizure of the car and four mobile phones.

Another Bulgarian citizen was apprehended in the same region the same afternoon while attempting to transport 26 illegal immigrants from Syria to the interior of Greece.

In particular, while inspecting the TIR truck driven by the 23-year-old Bulgarian, the Greek border police discovered a specially designated room with 26 Syrians hidden in it.

The authorities confiscated both the truck and a mobile phone.

The judicial investigation of the two cases is carried out by the prosecutor’s office in Alexandroupoli.
