At about 9 am today, an elderly man shot himself in the head in front of the stunned passers-by in Syntagma Square. He was standing on the stairs to the garden in the square when he pointed the gun at his head and fired. His was apparently around 60.
Ambulances arrived at the scene immediately. The man was taken to Evangelismos Hospital where he was found dead. Police are investigating the causes of suicide.

Psychiatrists warn that the trend toward suicide and extreme behaviour is bound to grow. "The economic crisis we are going through now and which is increasingly growing is a stressful situation. It comes and it is gradually taking different forms in our mind, depending on our nature and vulnerability. I define as vulnerability the mental state of a person who can cause problems not only to himself but also to the surrounding environment under the influence of stressful situations. There are people who end up having depressive outbursts and even start talking of suicide. Many of them do it. Similarly, another type of human nature can go to the extreme of doing things that are similar, but the opposite of suicide. Instead of harming themselves, they direct all their anger and suicidal tendency towards others," said in an interview for GRReporter Kyriakos Katsadoros, president of the NGO Klimaka.
