One dead and one missing after the storm

One man drowned and another is missing after his car was swept away from the overflowing waters Esonas river in Pieria, northern Greece. This is the tragic result of the bad weather, which has taken over Greece since Friday. The National Meteorological Services warn that the bad weather will stay in Greece also on Tuesday and Civil Protection Services advise to be extremely careful when traveling because the river levels can rise.

41 year old man drowned in the Pagassitikos Bay when his boat overturned after a sudden storm. Fortunately the man traveling with him managed to swim to the shore. The search for 46 years old man, father of three, is continuing. His car was swept away by the waters of the overflowing river Esonas in Pieria, northern Greece. Another six people, traveling with other two cars were saved by the Special Forces team of Civil Protection Services.

The highway Athens-Korinthos remained closed for over 10 hours, because mud landslides showered the road in Saint Theodor region, tore the crash barrier and blocked the road for tens of cars. Traffic problems also occurred on the Athens-Thessaloniki highway at the Tembi passage. In Pieria region many plantations were destroyed and many tobacco storages were flooded. Also, over 50 houses in Imatia were flooded. In Athens, the worst situation is in the southern suburbs Ilioupouli, Glyfada and Peristeri. The pouring rain closed the central Piereos Boulevard and there are traffic jams even now.

The National Meteorological Services warn that the bad weather will continue until tomorrow, Tuesday. The temperature will not fall and the maximum will be around 22˚C. The rain will continue, which will increase the level of the rivers, there will be thunder storms and hail is also expected. The winds will be strong – 4-5 Beauforts and in some places they will reach 6 Beauforts. Meteorologists expect the weather to start improving from Wednesday.
