Nikos Polychronopoulos took second place on the world billiard championship in Matosinhos, Portugal, which took place between June 26 and July 5 2009. The championship was held under the patronage of UMB – Union Mondiale de Billiard. 130 players from 18 countries took part in the competition. After many tough games Nikos Polychronopoulos won the prestigious second place and put Greek billiard among the world rank leaders. First was Eddy Merckx form Belgium and third – Jeremy Bury from France.

The final game had five sets and the last one was crucial for the final score in favor of Eddy Merckx.

Polychronopoulos’s success is not surprising for billiard experts. Born on March 24th 1978 in Athens he has been playing billiard ever since early age. He is a carrier of a golden medal from the 1999 Youth Championship in Murcia, Spain; silver medal from the 2005 World Championship for men in Sankt Wendel, Germany; silver medal from the 2009 World Cup in Sluiskil in the Netherlands. He also won second place in the Greek Championship, which took place in Athens on June 10, 2009.

News from another type of French billiard – Cadre 47/2, is the upcoming European Championship (July 14-19, 2009), which will take place in Athens. The competition will be held under the patronage of the European Billiard Organization. 39 players from 10 countries will participate.
