The Union of the cleaners and house maids in Greece sent a letter to all political parties, with which they request a meeting with their representatives. The cleaners want to inform the party members about the medieval work conditions in private cleaning firms.

“Enough big words! We cannot wait for them to start the initiative and to pass the necessary bill, which will remove the option to hire cleaning ladies from big firms in the cleaning sector. Because we see that no one is doing anything. We sent letters to all parties and we asked them to act and to pass the bill, which will forbid to rehire cleaning ladies. This way, the exploitation regime of our colleagues and mostly immigrants from outside the EU will finish. Also, we want the work that we do in this sector to be recognized as hard labor, so we can receive the necessary bonuses in addition to our salaries,” says an announcement by the Union of the cleaners and house maids, who want their proposals to be discussed in the Greek parliament and for a bill to be passed, which will put an end to the medieval work conditions in this sector.

In front of the prosecutor, representatives of the Union presented proof, which they have gathered from personal researches regarding the cleaning from private firms of the Dafni and Evangelismos metro stations in Athens. Konstantina Kouneva was an active member of the cleaners syndicate and was working in the Athenian metro before she was splashed with vitriol in December. Since then the investigation, which was supposed to make clear the reasons for the attack and to bring the criminals to justice, is gathering dust on someone’s desk.
