The prisoners at the Thessaloniki prison have been starving for 24 hours. This includes everybody – defendants and sentenced, who are waiting to be transferred in prisons around the country. The imprisoned are repining at the poor conditions and claim that they are left to spend months in spaces, which have an area of few square meters, which have a demeaning hygiene and on top of everything they are not allowed to go outside on a daily walk. All lawyer organizations in Thessaloniki are taking the side of the prisoners and they also confirm that the cells of the prisoners in the police stations are in a demeaning condition.

The situation is getting worse by the fact that the Thessaloniki prison “Diavata” is full and its administration is refusing to accept new prisoners. When some places get free, prisoners get sent to prisons in Komotini, Grevena, and Domokos, where the situation is not good as well.

Meanwhile, the prosecutor’s office in Thessaloniki is insisting that the prisoners should take part in the upcoming Euro-elections, which will be on June 7th, because the prisoners still have their political rights. 68 arrested and another 7, who are waiting for a transfer will be taken to “Diavata” prison, where there will be an election booth. The authorities are worried how those prisoners will be transported on the election day.
