During the weekend, a Mediterranean cyclone is passing through Greece. Bad weather enveloped the whole country – there is a snowy storm to the North, and there is pouring rain to the South, accompanies with strong winds. The bad weather will remain for the whole weekend and the Greek National Meteorological Center warns that the worst is going to come on Sunday.

On Friday, heavy snowfall started in Northern Greece. The snow blanket is thick in the mountains and especially over 400m above sea level. The snowfall closed off the border stations Ilinden-Exohi. Driving is difficult and must be done with caution and chains are mandatory in most Northern municipalities as well as on the Seres-Thessaloniki road.

Ever since Friday, there have been very strong winds throughout the country – 8-9 Beauforts. There are thunder storms in the Ionian Sea, Peloponnese, and in the Epir region. In Athens, the weather is also bad and the lowest temperatures will fall to 1C.

The bad atmosphere conditions forced two flights, for Prishtina and Skopje to land in the Thessaloniki airport “Macedonia.” 11 British Airways passengers left for Kosovo’s capital with cars and the rest preferred to go back to London. All Austrian Airlines passengers left for Skopje with cars.
