For a sixth consecutive time the “DESTE” foundation will award one of the few nominated young artists. The prize is given in order to support and promote the art of the new generation contemporary Greek visual artists. The six candidates have already shown the dynamics in their art on personal and group exhibitions in Greece and around the world.

The candidates were announced after the marathon meeting of the commission, which will also, chose the winner for 2009. The six nominated eliminated the other 24 candidates. The DESTE award was first given in 1999 to Panayota Dzamourani and goes with a money prize of 10 000 Euros.

This year, the winner will be announced on September 14th. On May 14th an exhibition will open with the works of art of the six candidates. The exhibition will take place in the Museum for Cyclades Art, with which the DESTE foundation has united in the program “Tribune for the young.”

Here are few words about the nominated lucky ones:

-      Atanasios Aryanas has studied in Greece, England, and Germany. His works research the connections between the different cultures springs, which start from one fantastic history of art museum but also from the pop and folk culture.

-      Vangelis Vlahos uses photo material and newspaper archives as instruments for one non-linear and very personal investigation and understanding of history.

-      The concept of the archive and the use of the documents in a different/personal way can be seen in the works of Irini Evstatiou.

-      Haris Epaminonda was born in Cyprus in 1980 and he represented his country in the 52nd Biennale in Venice together with the visual artist Mustafa Houlousi. Their work for the Biennale was video-art with mixed archives of the Cyprian TV.
