Meimarakis puts under control the attitudes in New Democracy

The political commission of New Democracy has unanimously approved the decision of the party authorities on keeping Evangelos Meimarakis head of the party. The leader of the "blue" will occupy the post until the spring of 2016, when the procedures for the election of a new party head will be triggered.

Following the intensive unrest in the party over the past few days Meimarakis has received a political mandate, which was his intention from the outset, proving that he is the most composed and the cleverest player of all, the Greek media read.

After a long pause, he has reintroduced the term "reformist social centre", thus showing that New Democracy is shifting from the right side to the middle of the political centre. In his speech to the members of the political commission, he has called on all those who have strayed from the party over the years to return to it.

"New Democracy follows the path of the social reformist cause, of logic, moderation and the joint drafting of its new programme. We want to invite everyone, regardless of which party they voted for, to come to us for Greece’s sake. We represent the unemployed, large families, young people, whose dreams have been broken, and the needy," he said.

Meimarakis does not exclude the occurrence of turbulent political events in Greece, noting at the same time that the government has no reason to call early elections. Furthermore, he has sharply criticized the government, accusing SYRIZA and Independent Greeks of having "collapsed the country in six months."

"Will they face the Greek people with hardships in order for them to solve their internal party problems?" Meimarakis wondered, adding, "When they tell us why they will announce elections we will then explain to them that we will win them."

New Democracy leader has urged the government not to provoke the main opposition party, which, as he notes, "will resist when our differences are serious both inside and outside parliament" however stressing that his party will support the European perspective of Greece. "We do not vote on measures and we do not support the government."
