The mass exodus begins

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday this weekend traffic on highways has increased significantly compared to last year.

Inter-city coaches

According to representatives of the bus company KTEL, the number of passengers has increased by 15% compared to last year on all routes. Passengers show a preference for inter-city coaches, especially those travellingl to the Ionian islands and the marine areas of the Peloponnese.

The picture at Athens airport is similar, where the movement has been much stronger since the beginning of this year compared to the last one. An increase of 18% is noted in passenger flow, and in July it reached 22% as compared to last July.

Since the beginning of January, there have been 1.3 million more passengers than last year and there has been an increase of 33% in tourists visiting Athens, who do not visit the airport.

In July (compared to the same month of 2013), on the basis of provisional data on flights, an increase of 13.90% is noted - in particular, by 7.61% for destinations in Greece, and by 19.07% for international destinations. The number of passengers has increased by 21.85%, 22.29% for domestic flights and 21.85% for international ones respectively.

From 1 January to 16 July 2014, Greek passengers have increased by 4.75% (in 2013, 1,597,686 Greeks travelled against 1,673,609 in 2014).

Piraeus port

An increase compared to last year has also been noted at the port of Piraeus concerning trips to the Argosaronic Gulf  and the islands of the Eastern Aegean Sea, the Cycladic islands and Crete.

For the first three days of August, 79 voyages are planned from Piraeus, 36 from Rafina and 18 from Lavrio. It is estimated that from Piraeus, 90,000 passengers will leave for the Cycladic Islands, the Aegean Islands, the Dodecanese and Crete, and another 25,000 for the islands of the Argosaronic Gulf on 92 voyages.

Ships particularly those to the Cycladic islands are almost 100% full, the situation to other destinations is similar.

Especially for the Argosaronic Gulf,  this year in June, there has been a 3.94% increase of passengers compared to 2013, and by 11.69% in July.

There has also been an increase in the number of cars that are transferred by ferries to the islands of the Argosaronic Gulf (26% for passenger cars and 1.4% for trucks).

For the rest of the islands this year, there has been a passenger increase of 1.51% in June and 6.22% in July. As regards vehicles the increase is by 8%, while for trucks it is by 5.44%.

For yesterday, Friday, 27 voyages to the Aegean islands had been programmed. Plus 34 voyages went out to the Argosaronic Gulf, carrying a total of 4,696 passengers and 420 cars.

From Rafina on Thursday 11 ships left with 5,760 passengers and 979 cars, and from Lavrio 6 ships with 1059 passengers and 264 cars.

Trains

An increase of about 10% was observed in passengers using trains of Greek railways, and trains in July are 100% full on the line Athens-Thessaloniki-Alexandroupoli.

Apart from Greeks, many foreign tourists choose to travel by trains within Greece.
