At 3 o’clock, on Sunday, 6th May, Marika Mitsotakis, wife of the honourary president of New Democracy and former Prime Minister of Greece Konstantinos Mitsotakis, passed away.

On 17th April, Marika Mitsotakis had been admitted for treatment in the hospital "Evgenidio."

The wife of Konstantinos Mitsotakis had chronic illnesses caused also by mobility problems. In recent days, her condition had deteriorated. Constantly next to her were her husband, and other family members.

As soon as she learned of her mother’s death, Dora Bakoyannis arrived from Crete, where she had gone to exercise her voting rights.

Her life and relationship with Konstantinos Mitsotakis

Born on 29th November, 1930 Marika Mitsotakis and the former leader of New Democracy Konstantinos Mitsotakis had four children - three daughters and one son. One of their daughters is the former mayor of Athens and former Minister of Foreign Affairs Dora Bakoyannis, and their son, Kyriakos Mitsotakis is a member of New Democracy. They have 13 grandchildren.

The descendant of the wealthy family Yanoukou, Marika married Konstantinos Mitsotakis in 1953. At the time while her husband was Prime Minister of Greece (1990-1993) she was often at the centre of the public attention (publications in the press, political controversy). It was considered that the influence which she exercised over her husband also extended over political issues such as the appointment and dismissal of ministers.

Her conflict with the former European Commissioner for the Environment and Minister of Industry at the time, Stavros Dimas, in 1991 is quite indicative.

Marika Mitsotakis and her husband own a very rich archaeological collection, which was sent in the year 2000 to the Museum of the town of Chania, on the island of Crete.
