The Ministry of Education announced that a cycle of five programs for "lifelong learning", which can include 400 000 people, would be launched in the autumn. There is a particular emphasis on young people who would be given a voucher to attend public and private schools, but there are also programs for additional training of already completed graduates, wishing to update their knowledge.

145.2 million euros were allocated for the five programs and they will begin in September. They include:

1. Vouchers for 55,000 people aged between 18 and 25 years for attending public or private higher education institutions and colleges

2. Programs that will be implemented by municipalities in various areas such as training in foreign languages, new technologies, etc. Within these projects will be formed 12,580 classes that will train 201,240 citizens in the period between 2011 and 2013.

3. Updating the knowledge of about 17,000 “old” graduates by training them in programs in the areas of their education.

4. Second chance schools. It is planned 58 schools to start operating in the country to train 35 classes of about 13,000 students for two years.

5. Distance learning programs for the elderly. 6,150 classes using new technologies will be formed that will train about 123,000 adults.

It is expected a program for the integration on the labour market of 20 000 unemployed young and older people to be approved along with the programs already planned. They will be trained and acquire practical knowledge to work in companies.

According to recent data from the Greek statistical office, unemployment rate jumped to 16.2% in March, which means that 811,340 people are unemployed. The unemployment rate in the same period last year was 11.6%. The total number of employed Greeks in March is estimated to be 4,185,325 people, while the economically inactive population is 4,335,461 people, according to the statistical office. The number of unemployed is reported to have increased by 24,111 people for one month - from February to March, and for one year (from March 2010 to March 2011) it increased by 232,617 people.

At the same time, Greek pupils took part in the seminar Social Innovation Camp 2011 in Brussels, where for 24 hours they had to come up with solutions to reduce youth unemployment by 50%. One hundred pupils from 14 European countries were divided into groups of different nationalities. Among their proposals to reduce the unemployment are to organize an exhibition for young people who want to try out different professions, to create a TV channel with topics only on employment matters and a Facebook community, which will deal only with professional career issues.
