Lie detector prevents the actions of "clever" gas station owners

The Greek police was equipped a few days ago with a cutting-edge new "weapon" against gas station owners who steal fuel from their customers. It is a special device that detects remotely and immediately inside which fuel pumps there are electronic systems installed to help fraudsters steal gasoline from unsuspecting customers.

The secret weapon of the police is a Greek patent - a specialist in electronic systems developed it and its price is about fifteen thousand euros. Before being introduced the device was tested in a specially adapted laboratory of the Greek University and the results of its operation are impressive.

Senior officers said for To Vima newspaper that "the new system will make the inspections of gasoline stations faster and automated. Only within three days 13 stations were checked in Athens and it became clear that five of them were stealing from their customers."

Gasoline stations consumers were "robbed" by using a special chip that is activated by remote control and has a sensor that takes into account the final volume of the fueled gasoline. As a result, there is less fuel in the tanks of customers than what the displays is showing.

To date, the police and other authorities inspected the gasoline stations by taking samples and seizing the petrol pumps to be examined for the presence of such a chip in a laboratory.

With the new system, however, the economic police immediately detect the emission of electromagnetic waves from the illegal systems in the columns. Then the device alerts the operator.

Plainclothes police officers in cars with regular registrations are going around gasoline stations, carrying the device. They stop near every gasoline station for a few minutes, pretend to be customers and check whether the device indicates the presence of the suspect signal.

In this way, the owner can not understand that a check is taking place and to turn off the system.

If the device indicates that illegal chips are installed inside the pumps the police leave the site and immediately inform the responsible teams of the Ministry of Development, who go to that station and remove the columns to find the illegal chips.

The police said that "all indications of the device proved accurate. The specific devices were found at all stations, where the presence of the chip that affects the sensors was indicated."
