The waters of the Maritsa river from the Bulgarian to the Greek part are moving with a speed of 200 sm3 per second and currently it is believed the situation is under control. This was announced by the local government of Evros. The authorities however do not hide the fact they are mobilized and are following closely the condition of Maritsa and are currently taking “artificial” floods in order to prevent a greater disaster. The level of Maritsa as well as the level of Arda are above the alarm limit. The measuring stations at the Pitio point have measured a level of 5,85 meters and at the horseshoe – 6,40 meters.

Today is the fifth day in a row when the level of the water on the Bulgarian – Greek border is in these ranges and the local authorities announce that they are fully mobilized. Due to a break in the river dams 66 thousand decare of farming land have been flooded already and another 6 thousand have bee “artificially” flooded when the authorities have let the waters of Maritsa flow in order to prevent an overflow at some other places. Another 17 thousand decare will be “artificially” flooded in the next few hours close to Lagina and Peplo in order to prevent greater disasters.

Apart from the local government of Evros in the operation are also taking part the local governments of east Macedonia and Trachea. According to the deputy local governor of Evros Michalis Kuyumdzis just today the level of Arda has increased by 1 meter and has reached 4 meters. Due to the heavy snowing in Bulgaria in the past ten days it is expected further increase of the waters both of Maritsa and Arda rivers.
