The former Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis will most probably testify in front of the Commission, which will undertake the investigation of the scandal for the property of the Vatopedi monastery. The scandal arose during the government of New democracy and the names of politicians of high rang were involved in it.

In spite of the fact that Mr. Karamanlis had decided not to appear personally in front of the commission, but to send an official letter, because of the violent critics by some members of New democracy about his government he said he will personally face the commission in the Parliament. In regards to the “Siemens” scandal, which also shook the country during the government of Karamanlis, the former Prime minister has not yet decided what position to take.

Mr. Karamanlis is obviously bothered by the fact that more and more members of New democracy are turning against him, having in mind that just several months ago they were praising him. Among them there are supporters of the current leader Antonis Samaras, others, who are part of the company of Dora Bakoyannis, as well as former ministers and deputy ministers from the government of Karamanlis and each of them has various interests to turn against him.

Nevertheless four days after the publishing of the letter of gratitude by Kostas Karamanlis to the former manager of “Siemens” Michalis Christoforakos, where the former Prime minister expresses his gratitude for the support to his party for “a new beginning”, the secretary Maximos Harakopoulos from the central office of New democracy stated the official stand of the party underlining that one could criticize the government of Karamanlis for the mistakes, the omissions and the delays of the reforms, however he added that “nobody can doubt the moral uprightness of the former Prime minister”.

The chairman of the Parliament Filippos Petsalnikos set the dates for the first sittings of the commissions, which will undertake the investigations of the two scandals. The commission responsible for the investigation of the “Siemens” case will sit on February 2nd, and by March 17th its first report has to be ready. The first sitting of the Commission for the investigation of the Vatopedi scandal is set for February 1st.
