The Ministry of Immigration Policy, along with the South Aegean Prefecture, have hired the Eleftherios Venizelos cruise ship, property of ΑΝΕΚ, to house nearly 2,500 refugees and illegal immigrants from Kos. They will remain on board about 15 days, with complete catering service. The ship is expected to dock at the port of Kos on Friday.

Capacity and amenities of the Eleftherios Venizelos:

  • It can take 800 cars.
  • It has 1,600 beds and can accommodate up to 2,500 people.

  • 1,000 can eat simultaneously in its catering establishments: 420 out of them in the ship's restaurant and 600 in its canteen.

  • Eleftherios Venizelos is an Ice Class passenger ship.

  • It has four engines and five electric motors.
  • Eleftherios Venizelos can operate as a ferry on domestic and international lines; it can be used as a cruise ship or as a floating hotel; it could even double up as a congress centre. It is certified to carry out voyages to the United States and South Africa.

Meanwhile, at 8.00 am today, the Blue Star 2 ferry docked at the Piraeus port, carrying 1,800 people on board, of which nearly 1,100 illegal immigrants.
