The Greek weather service has issued an emergency message that warns of heavy rains and storms over the following twenty-four hours.

It is expected that the heavy rains, which started falling today in the region of Eastern Macedonia, Thrace and the northern part of the Aegean, will continue until early Thursday morning.

Heavy rainfall is expected at night in the southern Ionian Sea, Central Greece, the regions of Attica and Thessaly, on the islands of Euboea and Crete as well as in the Sporades and the Cyclades. Heavy but occasional rains will fall in the region of Central Macedonia and especially on Halkidiki peninsula.

Intense weather events will affect the islands in the eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese from Thursday morning until the afternoon.

The Civil Protection service has also issued an emergency message that warns citizens to be especially careful and to take the following self-protective measures:

- to avoid working in the open air as well as activities in the sea and the coastal regions during the outbreak of the extreme weather phenomena,

- to secure their belongings, which could cause damage or injury if being swept by winds or heavy rainfall,

- to ensure that the gutters of houses and drains are cleaned.
