The dramatic parliamentary meeting on the referendum started right after 1 pm. The list of speakers is so long that voting will not start at 7 pm as planned, but at midnight instead.

It takes 151 ‘for’

According to articles 96-100 of the parliament’s constitution laying down the process for discussing a referendum, the floor is only given to one representative from each party, but the political leaders can speak if they so wish. The prime minister and party leaders are also entitled to respond to whatever somebody else has said. Those MPs who wish to can also enlist for a speech.

Ministers, as well as party whips, can also enter the fray.

Opposition parties can raise objections on the grounds of unconstitutionality.

The government needs 151 votes for its referendum motion to be endorsed.

SYRIZA and the Independent Greeks have 162 MPs between them: 149 from the former and 13 from the latter.

The referendum proposal is currently supported by SYRIZA, the Independent Greeks and Golden Dawn. The Communist Party said it would abstain.

The opposition New Democracy, PASOK and Potami are expected to vote against.

Expect further details.
