Do you like the Greek islands surrounded by the azure blue sea? Did it happen to you, at lest once, to dream of being able to enjoy the beautiful sunset from a small island that is only yours? Well, perhaps the dream to have your own piece of paradise will come true.

This at least reads the website www.privateislandsonline.com, which offers for sale a total of 12 Greek islands in the Aegean and the Ionian Sea and at very good prices. The Canadian web real estate agency offers the islands for sale at prices that start from 1.5 million and reach 15 million euros. Greek island are offered for sale on www.buygreekislands.com too.

As the online edition www.zougla.gr announced in early March, the LAOS deputy and former soccer ace George Anatolakis raised two basic questions to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Whose property are the islands and is the activity of such websites legal? If not, he asks how the government intends to ensure legality.

But the Foreign Ministry replied that it was not competent and a few days later the deputy raised the same questions to half of the members of the Ministerial Council, expecting a reply from the competent agencies.

The sale offers for the 12 islands appear in the Greek media not for the first time. According to an article in the British edition of The Guardian in August 2010, their potential buyers range from Russian tycoons to the new rich of China, who yearn to become the modern followers of Aristotelis Onassis. For those who do not have the financial resources for something so great, the publication in The Guardian offers something in the heart of the Aegean, which is small but equally attractive. The article states that the Greek state owns one third of the specific area, which is located on the island of Mykonos.

The best choice for the fans of the Ionian Sea is determined to be the island of Navsika. With an area that exceeds 1,235 hectares and two natural beaches, the island is offered for 15 million euros. The list goes on with islands in the Saronic Gulf like Agios Thomas with an area of 3,000 acres that is offered for 10 million euros, and a small uninhabited islet in the small Cycladic Islands, near Amorgos.

The issue of possible sale of the Greek islands appeared a year ago, soon after it became clear how bad the financial situation of Greece is. Then the German Bild - the newspaper with the highest circulation - published an article entitled: "Sell your islands, failed Greeks! Sell the Acropolis too."

Authors of the article were two German government members who said that "those that owe must sell whatever they avail to settle with their creditors." They even priced the Acropolis at 100 billion euro.

None of the Greek governments has had the idea of selling the symbol of democracy so far, but the government of Konstantinos Mitsotakis discussed back in 1990-1993 the possibility of selling small islands in order to solve the budget problems of the country. The violent responses of the society forced the government to abandon this plan, but then it appears in modern versions, such as rent for a longer period, every time Greece faces serious financial woes.
