The match between the national football team of Greece and Austria finished 2-1. The Greek team showed good game on the Ernst Happel field in Vienna and wan the confidence of Fernando Santos and the fans at the stadium. Although it was clear for all that it was far from using its capabilities in full... The first half even brought serious doubts as to the game of the Greeks. The second half, however, offset it. It was particularly successful for the team – full of goal chances and...goals.

The match began with weak attacks by the Greek team. The blue-whites tried to create goal chances very long but failed to score. Samaras, Salpingidis and Kone tried to match together, but either Austrian defender should stop their attack, or the players would look and could not find each other and they would loose the ball a few meters in front of Macho’s net.

The same, however, could be said for the home team. Although they didn’t score in the first half, their attacks started from the beginning. Four minutes after the start of the match they had already made Tzorvas sweat. The player Kavlak tried to score but the Greek goalkeeper saved the ball and his team. It was obvious that the home team played with the ball better. However, the visiting team made its first attempt to score relatively on time. Torosidis threatened the net of Austria during the 16th minute, but the home team defence had its saying. From this moment on the Greek internationals found their rhythm and kept the ball more often. However, their game did not undergo substantial change regarding the attacks.

Tzorvas was involved in stressful situation during the 36th minute. Maierhofer found himself in front of his net as he had come forward to meet him. There was collision between them two and the ball flew straight to the net.... The judge, however, considered the goal for a foul and the visiting team relieved. The score at the end of the first half was 0-0.

After the break the Greeks entered the field determined to fight to score. And they were not late. Samaras scored it in the 49th minute from a header. The shocked Austrians needed time to respond. They drew the score in the 66th minute. The almost thunderous shot of Fuchs coped with Tzorvas. The home team recovered quickly and could even take the lead in the result. Arnautović made good goal attempt that however ended out. Fotakis scored second goal to the hosts in the 81st minute after Samaras’ pass. Victory was already near. The home team did not give up. Janko tried to draw the score during the 89th minute but Tzorvas skillfully pushed the ball aside and sealed the victory for his team.
