After the initial shock due to Germany's refusal to discuss Greece's request for an extension of the bailout by six months, the Greek government had pulled itself together. At the request of the Greek side, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras today spoke on the phone with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. There are no details on the nature of the conversation, except that it was positive, in the direction of finding a mutually acceptable solution. The conversation, along with its translation, lasted 50 minutes.
Deputy Prime Minister Yannis Dragasakis too seems to be confident that tomorrow's meeting of the Eurogroup will result in an agreement. According to him, Athens has sent a specific request and so far, there has been no particular objection to that request. "There are forces that want to see Greece on its knees and to impose their will," said Dragasakis, stressing that the conflict is not between Greece and Germany, and finally recalling that the government of Alexis Tsipras has the clear support from the people and will not mislead them.
Greeks have no reason to worry about their deposits in Greek banks, Governor of the Bank of Greece Yannis Stournaras has assured. At present, the deposits in local banks amount to about 140 billion euro. Asked by journalists whether there will be a problem with ATMs in the case of a failure to reach an agreement with the Eurogroup tomorrow, he said that everything is under control and the Bank of Greece is the guarantor.
