Greek judo fighter Ilias Iliadis is one step away from the bronze medal in the 90 kg category. in the European Judo Championship in Vienna. Iliadis, who won the gold medal in the championship of Greece has three victories out of four matches and qualified for this game, which will determine one of two bronze medalists in Vienna.

In the pre-qualification round Iliadis won against the German Aaron Hildebrand with ipon and and against the French Romen Bufe with uazari. He was however, defeated by the 28-years old Azerbaijani Elkhan Mamadov with ipon. Mamadov is in the seventh position in the world and third in Europe. During last year's European Championships in Georgia, he won the bronze medal. In the additional qualifications he won against the Britain Matthew Persie, who was third this year at the World Cup tournament in Vienna and fifth in the Grand slam in Paris in the 90 kg category.

Young Greek judo fighters Nikos Muzenidis and David Tsokuris, 73 and 81 kg. respectively dropped early in the qualification rounds. Participation in this year's European Championship in Vienna was the first participation of athletes in a sports event of such a high level. During his meeting with the Swiss champion David Papon, Muzenidis lost by ipon one minute before the end of the 5 minutes.
