Greece and Cyprus will cooperate in 13 sports disciplines in 2010. During the meeting of the secretary general of the sport Panos Bitsaktsis with the chairman of the Cyprus sports organization Nikos Kartakoulis which was held in Cyprus, the two countries signed a written statement for the cooperation in the field of sports for the present year. The 13 sports in which the countries will cooperate are: football, track and field athletics, volleyball, handball, wrestling, swimming, boxing, fencing, weight lifting, rifle practice, archery, skiing and canoe – kayak. Besides these disciplines Greece and Cyprus are planning to take joint measures for the subsidizing of the federations of the disabled and deaf people in both countries, in the field of the sports journalism and also regarding the Women and Sports Commission.

In relation to the signing of the written statement on the part of Greece Panos Bitsaktsis emphasized on the need for both countries to fight for a clear sport. He underlined that achievements which are far from the idea for clear fight will not be tolerated. As Mr. Bitsaktsis pointed out the written statement for cooperation between the two countries is signed each year, however now this cooperation needs to become more constructive.

Mr. Bitsaktsis also stated that no matter what medals and what achievements both countries reach, they have to be a result of a true “struggle”.

Nikos Kartakoulis on the other side pointed out as a particularly important problem the following of the idea of the White book in this difficult moment which the sport is going through. He mentioned about the problems which have gathered heads as the fake competitions, the usage of banned pharmaceutical substances, bad management of the sports federations and others.

Traditionally the agreement for cooperation in the field of sport is signed between Greece and Cyprus each year. According to the words of the Secretary General of sports this year’s signing of the written statement aims at endorsing the already existing tradition, but also to increase and spread its approval as well.
