Greece took 12th place in the chart of UEFA for the 2009 – 2010 season. In spite of the drop out of Olympiakos from the Top 16 of the Champions league and the drop out of Panathinaikos from the European league the Greek teams managed to gather a total of 7 900 points, which is a record for the pat 8 years. (The last record of Greece was for the season 2001 – 2002 when the football teams managed to gather a total of 11 250 points).
The greatest number of points managed to gather the team of Olympiacos. Out of the 12 games it played in the Champions league it scored 7 victories, 1 draw and 4 losses which brought it a total of 17 500 points. Following it qualified the team of Panathinaikos with 4 games played in the Champions league and 10 games in the European league. In the first one it scored 1 victory and 3 losses and in the second 6 victories and 4 losses (a total of 7 victories v.s. 7 losses). The greens gathered a total of 13 580 points.
The two biggest teams of Greece were followed this season in Europe by three other Greek teams – AEK, PAOK and Larissa. The team of AEK gathered 4580 points with 2 victories, 1 draw and 5 losses. PAOK brought to Greece 3080 points with 1 victory, 2 draws and 1 loss and Larissa is with 2080 points with 1 draw and 1 loss.
Like this with the 29 899 points it gathered for the past 5 years Greece took 12th place in the chart of UEFA and this automatically secures the participation of the Champion of Greece in the Champions league not only for the 2010 – 11 season, but also for the 2011 – 12 season. This fact compensates to a certain extent the disappointment of the Greek football players and football fans from the drop out of the teams from the following stages of the European and the Champions leagues in this season.
