Vassiliki Vougiouka brought a gold medal for Greece from the World championship in fencing, which was held in Budapest. When she climbed the highest step of the ladder at the stage the young athlete bestowed to the Greek fencing one of the best moments for any sport, and further more the medal she won in Budapest is the first gold medal in the history of the Greek fencing. Her victories the young athlete started in the “64” stage. There she played without taking part in the preliminary qualification rounds because of her high position in the world rank list. Vougiouka scored four victories before she won against the Corean Kim at the semi finals and the Italian Bartsoka at the finals. For the journalist from the Greek press she commented on her victory very modestly by claiming she did not expect to take such a high position and that after she qualified for the final four she was just being happy for her success and not thinking about a further victory. This took the additional stress away from her and without realizing it she got the gold medal…

The great success of the 24 years old Greek seems to be a logical reward to her active sports career. In Greece Vougiouka starts her career in 2002 when she wins the ladies fencing tournament (with foil). In November 2004 she is the winner in the Grand prix in fencing in OAKA (again with foil). The same year in March she wins the cup of the Olympic idea. In November 2006 and October 2007 she wins the cup of Greece with the team of Athinaikos and in March 2007 she becomes the first champion of Greece in fencing with two weapons (foil and sword). In 2009 Vougiouka wins for the fourth time in a row the cup of Greece.

Her international career the athlete starts in April 2001 with her participation in the world male and female junior championship in fencing in Gdansk – Poland where she played with foil. In April 2002 during the world male and female junior championship in Turkey she managed to qualify among the first 16. During the two championships for the word cup which were held in March 2003 in Athens the Greek took 32nd place, which was also the highest place taken by a Greek (in the competition took part 76 competitors in foil). In October 2003 she took part in the world championship in fencing for women in Havana and took 39th place in foil. During the next championship for the World cup in March 2004 she managed to get to the stage “64”. The same year the Greek won a bronze medal in the European junior championship under 20 years old. In 2007 she took the 7th place out of a total of 35 competitors in the universal championship in Bangkok and she reached again to the “64”stage during the championship for the World cup in March 2008.
