A tourist bus with fifty-one Russians overturned on the highway Thessaloniki - Halkidiki peninsula near the village of Kardia in Nea Moudania. The accident happened around 4.30 am and the reason was probably the wet road surface, as it was pouring with rain during the night.
The fire brigade of Thessaloniki reported that four people died and thirty were injured during the accident. Twenty-three of them, some with serious injuries, were hospitalized in Papageorgiou Hospital in Thessaloniki. The highway in the area of the accident is still closed. The head of transport police in Thessaloniki Todoros Kiriakidis specified that the Russian tourists were on holiday in Halkidiki and were travelling on the bus to the airport to get home.
The driver of the bus was in shock and could not explain the accident. There are many dangerous bends in this section of the road and the lighting is dim. Policemen involved in the rescue of passengers told of a 36-year old father, who after having taken his child and wife out of the burning bus, died from his wounds.
