The end of the Age of Rehhagel marks the beginning of another, new era for the Greek national football team. What will it be and will it be as successful as the previous we will have the opportunity to see for ourselves. And the testament, which the German left is really rich. He led the team up the ladder to success. The national team reached the finals of Euro 2004, Euro 2008 and World Cup 2010 and qualified among the top ten in the world ranking of FIFA. Rehhagel remains in history as the longest-lived coach of the country and as the man who built the spirit of the team.

Who and what will he do with this rich legacy of Greek football is expected to see in the coming days. For now the media "invoke" the name of the Portuguese Fernando Santos as the next coach of the white-blue. The election of Fernando Santos as coach of the national team has confirmed also the President of the Hellenic Football Federation Sofoklis Pilavios hours before the team leaves the South African land. "I spoke with Fernando Santos and I concluded that he has a plan that can give results. He wants to deal with all national teams. From children to men. He wants to deal with the entire structure. He will be the coach for the men's team, but will also supervise the younger ages. He is a man who can arrange many things. As far as I know he wants to be a permanent resident of Greece and knows the Greek reality. He is also an affordable option from purely economic point of view".

The choice of the 56 years old Portuguese is considered to be the best for the given time, and declaring him for a coach of the national team is a matter of days ... The media inform of a verbal agreement between the two parties and a two-years contract for the amount of 600,000 euros per year. Should the Portuguese accept the offer he will be able to make his debut on 11 August when the national team will play a friendly match with the team of Serbia within the Prequalification phase for Euro 2012.

Though in the list appears also the name of Ernesto Valverde in his speeches on TV Sofoklis Pilavios leaves no trace of ambiguity on the question of the opinion of the football federation.

Fernando Santos also does not hide that it would be a pleasure for him to seat on the coach bench of the national team. "After the break, which I needed I am ready to work again ... I also had other offers but left them" - said the Portuguese, adding that if it comes to a formal proposal he will seriously consider it...

Fernando Manuel Fernandes da Costa Santos as in fact is his real name is known in Greek football for quite a long time. After taking over the teams of Estoril Praia, Estrela da Amadora and Porto, in the period 2001 -2002, he took over AEK as well. In 2002-2003 he became coach of Panathinaikos, and in 2004-2006 year of AEK. After coaching position at Benfica in 2007-2010 he also takes over PAOK. It clearly seems that time has come to take over the national team as well...
