New era begins for the Greek national football team. The new coach Fernando Santos elected a few days ago said that he intends to introduce radical changes in the play of the team. The glorious past of the team is not a concern for him, he enjoys it and in his words it proves the quality of Greek football. The changes he intends to make on the stadium are aiming at the team to ... break with the past. “Rehhagel had his own way of working and philosophy. My philosophy is different from that of my predecessor and serving the national team I want to introduce my views. However, the objective remains the same” told the 56-year-old coach to the Greek media. Santos stressed that he respects what Rehhagel has achieved but is adamant on new laws and methods of play. The new coach will have the opportunity to show his skills after just over a month when on August 11 the nationals will play their first friendly match with the team of Serbia in the Prequalification phase for Euro 2012. Until then, he expects heavy training and 24 hours work a day, as he says.

Santos said the team has analyzed the play of Georgia and Croatia in connection with the qualification phase of Euro 2012 and despite the short time he will make the best he can.

But expectations are not low. Testament which Rehhagel has left is rich and leading the team up the ladder to success is purely a challenge. After the finals of Euro 2004, participation in Euro 2008 and the first victory and two goals in World Cup 2010 the bar for the Greek football is raised even higher. Santos, however, is confident he will meet the challenge. Strong argument for this is his knowledge of the Greek culture and language. The Greek fans already know Fernando for his work in AEK and PAOK.

Choosing the Portuguese coach to train the national team was matched by his desire to fully develop his coaching abilities. He has agreed to take over all age groups in the national club. After a brief absence from the bench coach, he is ready to tackle work and now braces himself up.

His choice is considered extremely ripe from economic point of view. The 56-year-old coach signed a two-year contract for € 600,000.
